The Day we Became Godparents

The day we became godparents was such a special day for us, Gael is our one and only godchild. Chris and I have such a good relationship with his parents so it was quite an honor to be chosen to be his godparents. With how crazy 2020 has been we didn’t think the baptism would happen this year at all. The church had us change the date from June to July, postponed it until August, then they cancelled all baptisms for the year. Four weeks before the day of the baptism the church let us know the baptism was going to happen as planned. That left my aunt and her husband (the parents) and us (the godparents) scrambling around trying to prepare everything.

August 16,2020

The morning of the day we became godparents was a rainy, dreary morning. There was thunder and lighting so close the house shook. We needed a thank you card and gas in the car so Chris dropped me off at CVS while he went to get gas. Only after he drove away did I remember I needed a mask to go inside. So Chris had to drive back around to give me my mask. That was a sh*tshow. How I could even forget to put the mask on, I don’t know but oh well.

The ceremony was closed to the public, only parents, godparents and a few select guests could attend. It was a beautiful ceremony and it went great, even though everyone had to wear a mask and keep there distance. Gael was the second baby baptized that day and he wasn’t very fond of the water being poured on his head. Chris and I bought Gael a necklace with medallion of La Virgen de Guadalupe that he seemed to really like.

The party and el Bolo

The party was held at my grandparents’ house and only family was invited. It was a great party. The food was good, the music was loud and the company was great. Gael enjoyed himself and so did the rest of the guests.

In Mexican culture, the godparents do something called el bolo at the party. This is when the kids attending the party gather around and try to catch as many coins as possible that the godparents through in the air. It can be dangerous as the coins can really hurt if they hit you in the wrong place but the kids usually really enjoy themselves and really young kids don’t participate. Plus, who doesn’t like free money? And it’s something fun for the godparents to do.
